Control Food Cravings Without the Fight

Do you ever find yourself thinking about chocolate, biscuits, crisps or other favourite foods when you're not even hungry?

Perhaps you can go for hours without thinking about food, and then suddenly a craving hits.

You tell yourself you'll have just one — but before you know it, there's an empty packet.

Or perhaps you spend much of the day thinking about what you're going to eat next, trying to resist certain foods and feeling frustrated when you eventually give in.

Food cravings can feel incredibly powerful, but they don't have to control you.

Through personalised food cravings hypnotherapy, I can help you change the way you respond to cravings, reduce the constant thoughts about food and help you feel in control of your choices.

I offer hypnotherapy for food cravings in Torquay, Devon, and online via Zoom.

Why Do We Crave Food?

Food cravings aren't usually about being hungry. You might crave something sweet when you're tired, reach for chocolate when you're stressed or find yourself wanting a particular food because you're bored, emotional or simply used to having it at a certain time. Over time, these patterns can become automatic.

For example: Stress → craving → eating → temporary comfort → guilt → craving again. Or perhaps:Watching TV → reaching for snacks → eating → feeling you've lost control. Eventually, your brain can begin to associate particular situations, emotions or times of day with certain foods. This doesn't mean you've got no willpower. It means you've developed a habitual response. And habits can be changed.

Hypnotherapy for Food Cravings

Hypnotherapy works with your subconscious patterns — the automatic thoughts, behaviours and associations that can influence the choices you make every day.

During your sessions, we'll explore what's happening for you personally. Your cravings may be connected to:

  • Stress
  • Emotional eating
  • Boredom
  • Habit
  • Comfort eating
  • Certain times of day
  • Particular situations
  • Food being used as a reward
  • Constant thoughts about food
  • Restrictive dieting
  • Emotional triggers

There isn't a one-size-fits-all approach. Your sessions are tailored around you, your relationship with food and the changes you'd like to make.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help Food Cravings

Hypnotherapy can help you develop a different response when a craving appears.

Rather than automatically reacting to the urge, you can begin to create a little space between the craving and the action. That space makes all the difference.

You may find that you're able to think: “I could have that if I really want it, but I don't actually want it right now.” And there's a huge difference between choosing to eat something and feeling as though you've lost control.

My goal is to help you reduce the struggle and develop healthier habits that feel natural.

What About Sugar and Chocolate Cravings?

Sugar cravings and chocolate cravings are incredibly common. You might find yourself reaching for something sweet in the afternoon, after dinner or whenever you're feeling tired or stressed. Perhaps you keep chocolate in the house for everyone else but somehow find yourself eating it regularly. Or maybe you've tried cutting sugar out completely, only to find the cravings become even stronger.

Rather than focusing on banning particular foods, we can work on the thoughts and habits surrounding them.

The goal is to help you reach a point where you can enjoy these foods without feeling that they are controlling you.

What is Food Noise?

You may also have heard the phrase “food noise.” Food noise describes those persistent thoughts about food that can take up far more mental space than you'd like. It might sound like: Should I have that biscuit? I've already ruined today, so I might as well eat it. I really fancy chocolate. I'll start again on Monday. I'm hungry... or am I?

Hypnotherapy can help you change the thought patterns and habits that contribute to the constant focus on food, helping you develop a calmer relationship with it.

What Could Change?

  • Imagine reaching the end of a stressful day and not automatically heading for the biscuit tin.
  • Imagine opening the cupboard, seeing your favourite chocolate and thinking: “I don't actually want it.”
  • Imagine being able to have a small amount of something you enjoy and then naturally feeling satisfied.
  • Imagine spending less time thinking about food and more time thinking about the things you actually want to do.
  • Imagine making healthy choices because they feel good — rather than because you're forcing yourself to follow another set of rules.

That's the kind of relationship with food we're working towards. Freedom and choice.

Cravings don't always come from physical hunger. You may associate particular foods with comfort, reward, relaxation or a familiar routine. For example, you might automatically want chocolate when you sit down in the evening, even after eating a satisfying meal.

These associations can become habitual over time. Hypnotherapy may help you become more aware of these patterns and work towards changing your automatic responses, giving you greater freedom in how you choose to respond to cravings.
